Love is In the Little Things

It’s in the smile to the stranger.
It’s in the helping hand to the senior in the store who can’t reach the top shelf.
It’s in the random touch of the hand or maybe a hug to that coworker that is trying to hide the fact they are struggling.
It’s in the kind word of encouragement from that person you least expect.
It’s in that silly joke that is used to just make someone smile that seems like it’s been a rough go.
It’s in the text message you sent that simply says “thinking of you, and I love you”
It’s in the coffee u just bought that mom behind you at the coffee shop, that is ready to break ……
It’s in the little things.... Jesus didn’t command us to go out and do something BIG - He showed us how love in the little things too. Why? Because the little things matter more than you or I could imagine.
Very recently, there was a lady we knew and loved that joined the choirs of heaven, and it shook so many of us; it broke our hearts to think she’s gone - but it wasn’t because she was an amazing person of public influence or someone in a top position. She was simply herself. Real. Genuine - and she wasn’t well loved because of anything she did that was big, majestic or showy; it was all her little things that mattered the most: singing while she worked, the rest of us would turn down our music so we could listen to her voice. She lit the room up by walking in and making jokes; she would sit for hours and chat, talking of the ups and downs. She listened more than she talked, and her laugh would ring out through the whole room.
It was all in the little things she did - like seeing you sit by yourself for lunch, so she would grab her lunch and join you. She would see you hurting and reach out with a hug. She would see someone broken and invite them into her world - no one seemed too low for her to reach.
Sitting at her memorial, I couldn’t help but think of all the little moments that meant so much to so many people - and I sat in wonder, asking “did she know of the difference she made? Did she know who she touched?” See, it was all the little things that added up to show the love of God like no other.
Jesus modelled in the way of the little things - He would reach the lost, the lonely, the broken - and He did it all in the power of a touch, a few words of love and simply taking the time to reach out. Jesus reached out to the ones no one else would; He reached out to the forgotten, the disliked or the outcast - like the leper in Mark 1:41, or the woman who grabbed the hem of His garment in Mark 5 where Jesus took time to notice her. Or how about Zacchaeus? The tax collector who simply wanted to see Jesus from a tree, and Jesus went to his house for lunch ....
God doesn’t ask us to go out and do something big and attention worthy for Him - but one of the biggest messages in the bible is love, and one of the biggest ways to show it, is in the multitude of the ‘little things.’
1 Peter 4:8 (AMP)- Above all, have [a] fervent and unfailing love for one another, because love covers a multitude of sins [it overlooks unkindness and unselfishly seeks the best for others].
1 John 4:8b - for God is love. [He is the originator of love, and it is an enduring attribute of His nature.]
